As a sponsor of Manchester United Football Club, Vodafone relied on the passion of the club's fans to build sales in a multi-faceted campaign. A soccer-focused direct mail shot from dealers made an emotional connection with customers, encouraging them to 'make the biggest transfer of the season' to Vodafone's products. In turn, the dealers and ISPs were pitted against each other in a sales league that would culminate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play in the Vodafone Cup on the club's hallowed Old Trafford turf. Active involvement by the club included a kick-off email from manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
